Ballet Manila is 23 years strong this season. Dubbed as Tour De Force, audiences can expect an exciting line-up – a selection of our best originals, a ballet classic, a returning favorite, and a world premiere of a double header.
Ballet Manila has always been about bringing ballet to the people and the people to the ballet, and the selection of shows reflects this thrust. Ballet Manila CEO and Artistic Director Lisa Macuja-Elizalde shares, “We want to stay as a force to be reckoned with in the ballet industry, which is why we always make it a point to select shows that can be easily enjoyed by all. We want to show what we’re all about by giving the audience the entertainment that they deserve.”
Tour De Force opens big with Iconic 1.0 and Iconic 2.0. For the price of a single ticket, one gets a ticket to two shows! Ballet Manila has collaborated with some of the greatest choreographers and this is a chance for the audience to relive some of the most iconic collaborations with Tony Fabella, Osias Barroso, Agnes Locsin, Augusto “Bam” Damian, Anabelle Lopez Ochoa and so many more. Lisa promises, “The ‘Iconic’ weekend is going to be stellar, as each performance shows off the strength, history, and legacy of Ballet Manila. We’ve come such a long way, and this weekend is the perfect way to keep the ball rolling towards our silver year.”
Every year, Ballet Manila is committed to staging at least one classical ballet; and this season is no different. This year’s offering, Le Corsaire (The Pirate), is the classic tale of a pirate who voyages through the rigorous seas for his beautiful harem girl. It is a story of adventure, love, and betrayal, and the audience will surely be in for a ride. Ballet Manila will be, as usual, giving a fresh and new energy to the classic while showing off our strength in the Vaganova technique. Le Corsaire will also feature awe-inspiring leaps and turns from a new generation of Ballet Manila dancers.
From some high-action storytelling, comes the return of a family favorite. Lisa Macuja-Elizalde’s Cinderella makes its way again to the Aliw Theater stage, and she is more than excited to relive the magic again. Those who have missed it the first time will get to witness the magic, the spectacle, and the theatrics – a true must-see for the audience. “Cinderella was a surprise hit two years ago, and I’m so excited that we get to perform it again! I really missed it and I hope that more people watch it this time around.”
Ballet Manila’s 23rd performance season will end at a high note with the most special and newest double header, Deux. Ballet Manila’s frequent guest choreographer Martin Lawrance (Aria, Rebel) creates another choreographic masterpiece in The Winding Road, a ballet inspired by the music of The Beatles. Alongside the soon-to-be hit is Les Sylphides (Chopiniana), a dreamy, romantic ballet featuring the music of Frederic Chopin. This double header is a true testament to what Ballet Manila can do.
