Offstage: Willowy ballerina

Offstage - Willowy ballerina

They just have to keep on dancing! Ballet Manila artists love their craft so much that even when they’re away from the stage, they end up busting a move, trying out some steps or at least striking a ballet pose or two.

When Ballet Manila company artist Czarina Villegas’ photographer friend Ruel Tafalla asked her if he could shoot her in a tutu, she readily agreed — even when he wanted to do it in an unconventional venue. So one morning on a vacant lot near a construction site, Czarina channeled her surroundings for the unusual pictorial. In this resulting shot, the slender dancer’s vertical form echoes the towering cranes in the distance, while the arch of her hands seems to mimic the blades of grass gracefully swaying around her.
